Heartburn

Do you suffer from symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux? We refer to this as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or “GERD” which afflicts approximately 60 million people in the United States. Symptoms include “heartburn”, reflux and regurgitation. Sometimes stomach contents actually spill over into the windpipe and cause asthma, pneumonia, hoarseness and chronic cough. Dental disease can occur and result in tooth loss. While popular medications (“purple pill” and other acid reducing agents) can decrease the symptoms, pills don’t fix the actual problem. Chronic reflux can lead to the development of Barrett’ esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition. Some physicians think that acid reducing medications can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer.

At Georgia Coast Surgical, we offer two procedures to deal with GERD to reduce or eliminate your need for medication. For patients with a significant hiatal hernia, we offer laparoscopic surgery to fix the hiatal hernia and wrap the upper stomach around the lower esophagus. This results in a valve effect to reduce or eliminate reflux. We also offer a procedure that can be done endoscopically without the need for any incisions at all to reduce or eliminate reflux. This is the Esophyx procedure and it has withstood the test of time. Georgia Coast Surgical is the only practice currently offering this procedure in the Brunswick area.

Please give us a call if you suffer from GERD.
